DANCE and SWING MUSIC of the "ROARING TWENTIES"
The Cologne New Philharmonic and Volker Hartung invite you on a journey back in time to the 'Golden Twenties' and their ingenious swing music from Broadway to Berlin.
They immersed themselves in the playing style and sound aesthetics of the time and play in a unique playing style the best hits of the swing era from the original arrangements.
Some songs are so deeply rooted in the attitude to life of a region that one can rightly call them "Hits. " For New York and the American attitude to life, Broadway and its films, its shows, and Theaters were and are a synonym of national cultural identity. Names of composers such as Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, and their melodies were omnipresent in New York, just as the film in Babelsberg in Berlin developed a unique cultural flowering. Talented film composers such as Friedrich Holländer became famous overnight through 'The Blue Angel.' The famous hit 'Falling in Love Again' and the legs of the beautiful Marlene Dietrich enchanted Berlin and the whole world.
Listen to the great film and dance tunes of the 'Golden Twenties' on a musical walk from Broadway to Berlin with the beguiling sound of the Cologne New Philharmonic under the direction of Volker Hartung.
Have much fun!

'A sad thought, which you can dance', so described him Enrique Santos Discépolo, one of the greatest poets of Tango texts.
The Tango is one of the great authentic folk music of the world.
These recordings astonish not only by their passion, heartbreaking and typical Argentine melancholy, but they produce a mood, which Transports us back into these distant era.Great composers embraced the Tango (Ravel, Albéniz, Stravinsky and many more) and he moved into the elegant salons of the French metropolis. Many Tango artists came from Buenos Aires and worked in Paris, and they recorded numerous records. Some of these songs can be heard on this album, and their text are sung in French.
Unfortunately not much remains from the splendor of this time any longer, just photos, scores and shellac records are witness to its heritage.
The selection, which you, dear listeners and have in front of your eyes and ears offers a diverse collection of over 20 years of tango history, played by different formations.
Listen for example to the individual voices in Tango-couplets, accompanied by a single guitar, in which the typical rhythm is only hinted at and the lyrical character of singing stands in the foreground. You also will listen to numerous Tango hits, that could effortlessly flame up every today's Ballroom atmosphere.
It is admirable, how free, how passionately and relaxed the singers and musicians play out their emotions, how entirely genuine they could express their feelings and how tastefully and naturally all this is done: it comes to us after so many years and every Tango Orchestra has its own distinguished sound.

Sidney BECHET at the Paris International Jazz Festival 1949 with Orchestra Pierre Braslavsky
At the Paris Jazz Festival in May 1949 Sidney Bechet, who was formerly not very well known, became the most outstanding and talked-about performer.
His remarkable musicality, paired with exceptional instrumental skills, the roundness of intonation and the generosity of his phrasing, and the form of contact between him and his public explains his fabulous success. During the one free day of the festival, he was invited to fly to Geneva, where, together with the Orchestra of Pierre Braslavsky he gave his one-time debut in Switzerland on 14 May 1949.
The accompanying musicians did a fine job supporting Bechet in this extraordinary concert, especially the rhythm section with Roger Kara, Michel Pacout, and the great bassist Eddie Bernard, who also had some good solo passages on their own.
The recording of this historic event was restored with great care to today’s listening standards.

This album contains Sidney Bechet's sensational concerts in Paris in May 1949. Formerly not very known there he became the most outstanding and talked about performer at the International Jazz Festival of Paris and also at the 'Jazz Parades'. His presence on the stage with Pierre Braslovsky's Orchestra aroused an enormous wave of enthusiasm. His remarkable musicality, paired with exceptional instrumental skills, the roundness of intonation and the generosity of his phrasing, and the form of contact between him and his public explains his fabulous success.
The extremely rare recording taken from contemporary broadcast emissions was of very low sound quality. Great efforts were applied to restore these phenomenal performances to today's listening standards.

Who and what was Georges Boulanger? Despite his preeminence as a gypsy violinist, he was no gypsy.
Born into a musical family in 1893 in Tuclea, Romania, as the son of a Greek father and Bulgarian mother,
his real name of Panzati was set aside in favor of the good sounding pseudonym.
The name Boulanger, created by his Francophile parents, soon made him world-famous.
He received the best possible training at the Bucharest Conservatory and then in Dresden with Leopold Auer,
the most famous violin teacher of the time, and whose world-renowned students (i.e. Jascha
Heifetz and Nathan Milstein) were the most significant virtuosi. Georges Boulanger conquered the field in Berlin of the 1930s as one of the greatest and most famous Gypsy Violinist with his incomparable tone, his vibrato, his great virtuosity and distinguished showmanship.
Those who will listen to his recordings have had an encounter with greater art.
One can hear his delightful compositions, his standards and classics, the tangos of his
best time which, thanks to modern techniques, again sound fresh and new - better than ever.
It makes him unforgettable. Salon Music and Georges Boulanger: DA CAPO!
Georges Boulanger (1893-1958) was a Romanian violinist, conductor and composer.
He is considered one of the most important salon violinists of the interwar period. He achieved great fame in the 1920s and 1930s, especially in Germany. Boulanger played for various record companies records and reached its peak in the years 1935/1936.
He was student of Leopold Auer in Dresden until 2010. (Other students of Auer were Jascha Heifetz, Nathan Milstein, and Mischa Elman.) Boulanger reached great fame in the salons of St. Petersburg, before coming to Berlin in 1922, where he reached fame with his own compositions of distinguished salon music for the violin.
Boulanger played in radio transmissions that were broadcast live throughout the country. He played in the most famous houses in Berlin and other large European cities such as the Savoy Hotel in London and was contracted by the Bote & Bock Edition who published his musical compositions.
The recordings of this album have been directly transferred from the original 78rpm-matrices and therefore deliver the definite best possible sound results.

This album may help to recall the memory of the voice phenomenon Magda Hain, who, as a 19-year-old stenographer, became one of the most popular singers for German radio listeners during WWII.
The songs that Berlin composer Gerhard Winkler wrote for her have become an integral part of German music. With this production, the voice of Magda Hain returns again to the German and international music distribution. The historic recordings, produced between 1942 and 1952, are restored in a cautious manner, so that the original sound of her splendid voice is fully retained.
