Everybody knows Charlie Chaplin as the greatest comedian and director of the cinema.It might be less known, that he composed his film music himself and even conducted it in the studio. But in his youth, Chaplin played the cello, and he was an excellent musician.
Presented here is the adorable music to his masterpiece »Modern Times«, his silent film comedy from 1936, in which the film genius satirizes the excesses of the industrial age - and for the first time - raises his voice in the famous 'Titina nonsense song'.
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein Volker Hartung is presenting his recording of the New-York Musical »West Side Story«. The show was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet and plays in a downtown Manhattan setting. In 1961 Bernstein prepared a suite from it, titled „Symphonic Dances from West Side Story“. This suite is one of the most dazzling showpieces in the entire symphonic repertory.
Also included in this album celebrating the magic of New York are works of George Gershwin:
His masterpieces of Symphonic Jazz: „Rhapsody in Blue“ for piano and orchestra from 1924 and »An American in Paris«. Italian pianist Filippo Faes gives an admirable example of his great art, accompanied by Volker Hartung conducting his Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra.
Gershwin himself wrote about his works: „I understand it as a sort of musical kaleidoscope of this fast-paced melting pot called America, as our Blues, our crazy city New-York“

Frederic Chopin composed his wonderful E minor Piano Concerto in Paris, when he was 20 years old. For the first performance he was accompanied by a string quartet, before orchestrating it for grand orchestra and piano. On this album Slovenian pianist Natasha Majer and conductor Volker Hartung recreate this original version using a string orchestra setting consisting of players by the Cologne New Philharmonic.
The result is a beautifully balanced sound in a fascinating interpretation, recorded in the great acoustics of Hamburg’s Laeisz Concert Hall in Germany.

Volker Hartung and his Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra made a beautiful recording at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with Rimsky-Korsakoff's Symphonic Suite Sheherazade' from 1001 Nights'.
He conducted the fabulous orchestra with Concertmaster Stefan Filas enchanting with his famous violin solo, which represented the narrator princess, and cellist Guido Schiefen gave the prince with his mesmerizing playing.
In the wind section, a number of Coryphaei presented their solos: Michael Schubert, 1st flute; Frank Struck, 1st Horn, Miltos Mumulides, 1st clarinet, Detlev Klestil, bassoon and Georg Bongartz, solo oboe.
In addition flutist Michael Schubert and Lika Yakupova deliver two high-speed versions of Rimsky’s „Flight of the Bumblebee“.

Since its world premiere in Vienna on December 30, 1877, with Hans Richter conducting, the Second Symphony has become one of Brahms´ most popular works, a bright and buoyant piece, full of sunshine and good cheer.
Listen to Volker Hartung and his Cologne New Philharmonic’s brilliant performance of this masterpiece recorded at Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, Germany.
The String Sextet No. 1 in B flat major was composed in 1860 by Johannes Brahms and premiered in Hanover by an ensemble led by his friend Joseph Joachim. The sextet is scored for two violins, two violas, and two cellos. The Chamber ensemble of the Cologne New Philharmonic, including Volker Hartung at the Viola performed this work at the great acoustics of Cologne’s 11th-century Romanesque church St. Mary's in the Capitol.

The Cologne New Philharmonic Orchestra and Maestro Hartung are celebrating the genius of Gioachino Rossini, the most celebrated Opera Composer of all times.
His music sounds as Champagne sparkles!
Besides overtures to his famous operas Barber of Seville, The Italian in Alger, La Cenerentola and William Tell, this album contains instrumental works from his earliest days: Rossini wrote his sonatas for strings when he was just 12 years old. On this album Serbian flute virtuoso Dejan Gavric performs one of these joyful pieces together with the fabulous strings of the Cologne New Philharmonic.
With 18 years Rossini composed „Variations for Clarinet and small orchestra“. This work sounds like a coloratura aria for the clarinet and gives the soloist great opportunity to prove his virtuosic talents, as Greek clarinetist Miltos Mumulides shows brilliantly!
